Bioinformatics Internship

Bionano is a leader company in the genomics field that develops a unique high-throughput, single-molecule genome mapping platform. The platform can find large structural variants and finishing the assembly of entire genomes in ways that no other genomics technology can. We are seeking a promising Bioinformatics intern to join our highly collaborative bioinformatics team to help develop our pipelines. This is a summer internship position located in our San Diego headquarters.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Our team has expertise in multiple areas including bioinformatics, statistics, computer science, and machine learning. Our high-level pipeline is based on Python and common scientific libraries and runs on clusters.

The Bioinformatics Intern will develop tools to improve and scale some of our bioinformatics algorithms. The position will be of great value to students interested in working with genomics data.

  • An interest in learning how to setup large-scale processing pipelines
  • An interest in designing data structures to parallelize bioinformatics algorithms
  • You will have the opportunity to work with High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters and use cutting edge Python-based parallel computing platforms
  • You will learn the full cycle of software development, using best practices: version control, code quality, and testing
  • Contribute to presentation of methods, results, conclusions, and recommendations


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Recently graduated or current undergraduate- or graduate-level students
  • Full-time student pursuing an undergraduate degree in one of the following fields or related studies: Biological Sciences, Genomics, Computer Science, Computational Biology
  • Basic knowledge in biological processes and genomics

Skills and Education


  • Background in computer science, statistics, bioinformatics, or computational biology
  • Very proficient (preferably expert) in object-oriented programming with Python
  • Familiarity with the concepts of parallel computing: job scheduling, shared file systems, multiprocessing
  • Familiarity with the data structures and libraries typically used for scientific computing using Python: Pandas, Numpy, Scipy, and Scikit-learn
  • Basic knowledge in biological processes and genomics
  • Able to clearly communicate and present your ideas, methods, and results


  • Experience in biotechnology and exposure to lab settings is a huge plus
